What It’s Really Like
1. It’s Long...Really Long
You’ll drive around 1,200 km of open road with very few towns. The scenery is wide, flat, and mesmerising, perfect for those who love the meditative side of long drives and fitting in a lot of podcasts!
2. Roadhouses Become Your Best Friends
Fuel, snacks, showers, and friendly travellers, roadhouses are essential lifelines.
Expect fuel to be more expensive here. Download offline maps before you set off so you know where your closest roadhouse is.
3. Wildlife Is Everywhere
Kangaroos, emus, camels, wedge-tailed eagles, and even dingoes. Avoid driving at dusk and dawn as it’s peak wildlife collision time.
4. The Bunda Cliffs Are Jaw-Dropping
These 100-metre limestone cliffs along the Great Australian Bight are some of the best coastal views in the world and easily accessible via coastal pull-offs.
5. You’ll Meet Characters
Travellers on the Nullarbor love the camaraderie. Roadside chats become part of the experience.
Survival Tips
1. Plan Fuel Stops
Distances between fuel can be 150–200 km. Never pass a roadhouse with less than half a tank.
2. Bring Plenty of Water
At least 5–10 litres in the car and more in summer.
3. Download Music & Maps
There’s no reception for long stretches.
4. Check Your Tyres
A well-maintained car or campervan makes a huge difference here.
5. Start Early & Take Breaks
Fatigue is the biggest danger on the Nullarbor.
Budget Tip for Nullarbor Travellers
Because rental companies often need vehicles moved between Perth, Adelaide, and Melbourne, Imoova frequently offers $1 per day relocation cars and campers on this route, making the journey incredibly affordable. Get a deal with a fuel reimbursement and you'll be laughing!
