Aussie Roadtrip Tips

Australia's Big Things

It's not an Aussie roadtrip without spotting a few of the iconic Big Things at the roadside. You name it, and Australia has an enormous statue of it, most likely in the middle of nowhere. Ugg boots, koalas, mangoes, the list is endless.

Originally the Big Things were created to lure tourists, strategically placed at the side of main roads throughout Australia in the hopes travellers would get out of their vehicle and explore the surrounding area. Now, they are so embedded within Australian culture that several of the statues are heritage listed. People base road trips around how many Big Things they can tick off along the way!

Here's a guide to some of our favourites here at Imoova.

The Big Banana

Located in Coffs Harbour NSW, the big banana has become something of a landmark on Australia's east coast. It was created in 1964, designed to stop traffic. Now, there's a full on banana themed amusement park! If you're doing an East Coast relocation then be sure to visit.

The Big Uggs

Located in Thornton, NSW the Big Uggs are 13 x the size of your typical ugg boots! Just beside them you can take a factory tour and learn about the production process.

The Big Cassowary

An iconic species in Far North Queensland, the Big Cassowary is located in Mission Beach. If you've not been lucky enough to spot one in the wild make sure to at least get a selfie with the statue!

The Boxing Croc

Located just outside of Darwin in Humpty Doo, NT this big thing weighs in at a massive 7 tonnes! It was built to celebrate Australia's victory in America's Yacht Cup race in 1983.

The Big Pink Panther

Larrimah might now be famous for the Netflix show 'Last Stop Larrimah', but back in the day it was famous for pink panthers! The Larrimah Hotel is pink panther themed and definitely worth a visit if you're doing a roadtrip in the Northern Territory.

The Big Galah

Located in Kimba, South Australia the Big Galah depicts Australia's adorable pink cockatoos. It stands at a massive 8 metres high, it was built to mark the halfway point between the East and West coast.

The Giant Koala

Located at Dadswell Bridge in Victoria, the Giant Koala looks slightly terrifying compared to it's real life furry counterparts! It's been nicknamed 'Sam'. There is a gift shop located inside the structure, for all your koala souvenir needs.

The Big Scotman

Nicknamed Scotty, he is located near Adelaide in Medindie South Australia. He is thought to be one of the very first Big Things in Australia.

The Big Pineapple

Located in the Sunshine Coast QLD, the Big Pineapple is a heritage listed attraction. There's plenty to do there, with a pineapple train that takes you through rainforest, orchids, and passes by the nearby zoo. They also hold concerts, music festivals, and events there!
