Things To Do On An Edinburgh - London Roadtrip

When it's not raining, the UK is an extremely underrated place for a roadtrip! There’s something special about hitting the open road between two of the UK’s most iconic cities. The journey from Edinburgh to London offers a blend of history, countryside charm, quirky attractions, and vibrant towns. Whether you're in it for castle spotting, cosy pubs, or scenic detours, here’s a fun-packed list of things to do along the way.

Edinburgh

Before you even leave the city:

  • Edinburgh Castle: Start with the classic.

  • Arthur’s Seat: Hike up for sunrise views.

  • Dean Village: A hidden riverside gem.

Stirling

About an hour from Edinburgh, Stirling is packed with history.

  • Stirling Castle: One of Scotland’s most important castles.

  • Wallace Monument: Climb for panoramic views and learn about William Wallace.

  • Battle of Bannockburn site: A key moment in Scottish history.

Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park

A stunning detour west.

  • Luss village: Picture-postcard cottages on the loch shore.

  • Loch cruises: See the loch from the water.

  • Ben A’an: A manageable hike with incredible views.

East Neuk of Fife

Charming fishing villages with cobbled streets and great seafood.

  • Anstruther: Legendary fish and chips at Anstruther Fish Bar.

  • St Monans: Cute harbour and old windmill.

  • Crail: Gorgeous harbour town with art galleries and cafés.

Alnwick & Northumberland

As you head south, stop here:

  • Alnwick Castle: Hogwarts film location.

  • Bamburgh Castle: Towering over a wild beach.

  • Holy Island of Lindisfarne: Reachable by a tidal causeway.

Stroll the Medieval Streets of York

Halfway between Edinburgh and London, York is a must-stop city. Walk along the historic Shambles, explore the mighty York Minster, and if you're brave enough — join an evening ghost walk through the narrow alleyways.

Tip: Try a traditional Yorkshire pudding at a local pub.

Explore the Yorkshire Dales

f you’re craving countryside views, detour into the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Think rolling hills, dry-stone walls, waterfalls, and quaint villages like Grassington and Hawes.

Don't Miss: Aysgarth Falls and a slab of Wensleydale cheese.

Visit Durham’s Cathedral and Riverside

The city of Durham is compact, beautiful, and steeped in history. Explore the UNESCO-listed Durham Cathedral and walk along the picturesque River Wear.

Snack Break: Grab coffee and cake at one of the indie cafés in the old town.

See the Angel of the North

As you pass Gateshead, you can’t miss the Angel of the North, a towering steel sculpture standing watch over the A1. It’s a great quick stop for a photo op and to stretch your legs.

Wander through the Peak District

For fresh air and hilltop views, detour into the Peak District National Park. Perfect for a walk, picnic, or even a hike if you’re feeling adventurous.

Favourites: Bakewell (yes — for the tart) and Chatsworth House.

Pub Lunch in the Cotswolds

As you near London, head west into the Cotswolds for honey-coloured stone villages and countryside pubs. Stop in Stow-on-the-Wold or Bourton-on-the-Water for a slow, cosy lunch.

Final Stretch to London

Once you reach London, treat yourself to a celebratory drink or dinner. Maybe end the road trip by watching the sunset from Primrose Hill or along the South Bank by the Thames.

On this roadtrip you’ll see dramatic glens, sparkling lochs, castles galore, and some of the most beautiful coastline. For the journey stock up on classic UK treats — think Percy Pigs, pork pies, and Salt & Vinegar crisps.
