Our top tips for an Adelaide to Melbourne Roadtrip

See the famous Great Ocean Road & the beautiful South Australian coastline on a budget by relocating cars, campervans & motorhomes for $1 per day!

Day 1: Adelaide to Robe

After picking up your relocation vehicle from one of our trusted suppliers, it's time to hit the road.

3.5 hours away from Adelaide is Robe, a small town on the coast filled with bakeries, cafes, pubs, and a famous ice cream shop. Make sure you go via Hahndorf, Coorong National Park (if you have a 4WD), and Long Beach. There's plenty wineries on the way too for the passengers!

If you're looking for a powered campsite, we recommend Sea Vu in Robe. Top tip: try and get an ocean facing site, you won't regret it!

Day 2: Robe to Mount Clay State Forest

After grabbing breakfast at one of the local cafes, start the 2 hr 45 minute drive to Mount Clay State Forest, where you can truly budget travel by free camping.

On the way be sure to visit Carpenter Rocks, Cape Bridgewater, or Mount Gambier for the famous Umpherston Sinkhole.

Stop at Sawpit Free Campegrounds within the forest where you can park up for free, it even has toilets and BBQ areas. If you're lucky you'll spot some wallabies or koalas. The forest is home to bike trails and bushwalks which you can take advantage of during the day.

Day 3: Mount Clay State Forest to Apollo Bay

On day 3 drive just over 3 hours to the famous Apollo Bay on the Great Ocean Road.

We recommend stopping at Port Fairy which is labelled the worlds most liveable community, as well as Port Campbell, Peterborough, Loch Ard Gorge, Twelve Apostles, and Gibsons Steps before reaching Apollo Bay. Be prepared for some twisting roads, but trust us it's worth it. Make sure you're camera ready - you'll be taking a lot of photo's today!

If after free camping on night 2 you want a powered site tonight, we recommend Big 4 Pisces Apollo Bay - the star gazing here is unbelievable and some sites have an ocean view.

Day 4: Apollo Bay to Torquay

After a morning swim or surf, head off along the remainder of the Great Ocean Road. The drive to Torquay is only 1.5 hours however you'll want to allow plenty of time for stops.

The first stop, Kennett River is only 25 minutes away. Here, visit Kafe Koala for some breakfast and then take a walk up the hill behind the cafe. Here you're bound to see koalas in the wild, it has one of the highest concentrations of koalas in the country. They can be hard to spot on an overcast day but keep looking and we guarantee you'll see one!

Next up is Lorne, 30 minutes away. If you're a confident driver we recommend Teddy's Lookout, it's a very steep/wind road so we wouldn't recommend doing this in a 6 berth motorhome. Lorne is a popular surfing spot with some great fish and chips. You could spend hours watching people fishing at the jetty.

Another 30 minutes away is Anglesea, another great place for surfing. If you want to see kangaroos in the wild be sure to visit the golf course here where you can find groups of them just roaming the course! Just before Anglesea you'll drive under the Memorial Arch, also known as the famous Great Ocean Road sign, make sure you stop for photos!

Drive a short 17 minutes to Torquay, the end of the Great Ocean Road. Visit Bells Beach and the National Surfing Museum.

Day 5: Torquay to Melbourne

Spend the morning at the beach before packing up and getting ready to return your vehicle in Melbourne, which is a 1.5 hour drive away. On the way you could grab some lunch in Geelong, or go the coastal route and visit Portarlington and Clifton Springs.

When you get to Melbourne there's no shortage of things to see and do - visit art galleries, admire the street art, vintage shopping, St. Kilda & more!
